New Noida Airport from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in just 80 minutes. Rapid rail corridor will connect directly to IGI airport. The rail corridor will increase connectivity between other parts of Delhi and the two airports.
From Delhi’s IGI Airport to the new Noida Airport in just 80 minutes! The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the Rs 16,000 crore rapid rail corridor that will provide direct connectivity to the upcoming Noida airport, often called Jewar airport, with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. High-speed rail networks, in cities around the world that have multiple airports, are commonly used for seamless passenger transfers.
According to a detailed project report being prepared by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), this rail corridor will connect other areas of Delhi and the two airports.
The detailed project report of the corridor is expected to be completed by March, ET reported.
Nodal Officer of Noida International Airport Limited, Shailendra Bhatia said that the project will take four years to start. This new rapid rail corridor will significantly enhance the attractiveness of the greenfield Noida airport and handle passenger traffic from Delhi airport.
Noida airport, which will have its first flight later this year, has already signed agreements with IndiGo and Akasa Air.
It is noteworthy that GMR Group operates Delhi Airport, while Noida Airport is operated by Zurich Airport.
As per the plan, Ghaziabad station will be an interchange station for Delhi-Meerut Rapid Rail Transport, which will connect to Noida Airport. Through the under construction Delhi-Alwar Rapid Rail, passengers will also be able to connect to Sarai Kale Khan, the first station of Delhi-Meerut Railway. The Delhi-Alwar rail, expected to be completed by mid-2025, will have a station at Indira Gandhi International Airport and Aerocity.
Shailendra Bhatia said that this high-speed connection is important between both the airports and the Delhi region to increase the catchment area of the airport. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has approved this project. Travel time should be approximately eight minutes.
While other options such as an express metro directly connecting the two airports were considered before the Noida Rapid Rail, they were unviable due to the cost of the project.
Also, Noida airport authorities are also building a high-speed bus corridor to connect the airport with Delhi and Gurgaon. Shailendra Bhatia said that multi-modal transport connectivity is being planned.
Noida Airport officials believe that such connectivity will attract more airlines to start. An airport official said that when domestic airlines are approached, they will definitely consider connectivity. The official said that such government efforts are very beneficial.
The airport is expected to begin service by the end of this year, CEO Christoph Schnellmann said. He said runway asphalting and paving works are currently underway, and installation of the baggage system has been fully started. Construction activities at the airport are expected to accelerate in the coming months, as well as efforts to develop retail services and food and beverage experiences at the airport.
