On November 16, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Purvanchal Expressway, a key infrastructure project, which state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has described as the ‘backbone of the economy of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The development began nearly three years after Modi laid its foundation stone in Azamgarh in July 2018.

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved to building of two link expressways that will connect the Purvanchal Expressway and the Agra Expressway. UPEIDA (Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority) has also finalized the company to construct the expressway; These two expressways will be ready in the next two years. MSV International had demanded a consultancy fee of Rs 4.87 lakh per km. MS Park Futuristic had applied for Rs 1.50 lakh per km and Pioneer Infra had applied for Rs 1.75 lakh.

Purvanchal Expressway is 340.8 km long and 6 lanes wide(expandable to 8 lanes) expressway in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The expressway connects Chand Saray village near Gosainganj in Lucknow district with Haydaria village in Ghazipur district on NH-31. UPEIDA, Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority, has built it. Akhalakiri Karwat village near Kurebhar in Sultanpur district has a 3.2 km long airstrip for emergency aircraft landing on the Purvanchal Expressway.

The Purvanchal Expressway connects Chand Saray village near Gosainganj in Lucknow district with Haydaria village on the NH-31 in Ghazipur district. It passes through nine districts of Uttar Pradesh: Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur (from west to east).

Purvanchal Expressway Timeline

The Purvanchal Expressway project was launched by the former chief minister of UP Akhilesh Yadav in May 2015 as the Lucknow-Azamgarh-Ballia Samajwadi Purvanchal Expressway. Yogi Adityanath’s government started it as a Purvanchal Expressway project in 2018. This project will boost infrastructural development in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. 

Purvanchal Expressway Cost

The Purvanchal Expressway, costing Rs 22,496 crore, connects several central districts of the state with the eastern districts and also adds these districts to the direct road connectivity network leading to the national capital Delhi. The expressway, which has seven bridges and 22 flyovers, also has an airstrip, which will allow the landing of emergency flights.

The Expressway route starts from Gosainganj in Lucknow district to Haidaria village on National Highway 31 in Gorakhpur. Further Varanasi-Azamgarh Expressway connects it separately. Also, the Gorakhpur Link Expressway will connect the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur village in Azamgarh district. This road is 340.8 km.

After the construction of 4 lane-wide and 17 km-long Buxar-Ghazipur elevated road, Lucknow will be directly connected to Buxar, Arrah, Patna, and some other districts of Bihar by NH-922 and Purvanchal Expressway.

Delhi is connected by three expressways: Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and Agra-Lucknow Expressway. Finally, Delhi is connected to the Purvanchal Expressway, which conveniently connects the eastern end of Uttar Pradesh.

Purvanchal Expressway Benefits

  • The establishment of the Purvanchal Expressway has facilitated transportation in Uttar Pradesh. This has reduced the travel time between the districts connected to Delhi. Especially in the expressway and surrounding areas, it has given rise to many businesses and enterprises.
  • Yamuna Expressway and Agra-Lucknow Expressway provide transportation from the eastern border of the state to the National Capital Region.
  • Purvanchal Expressway connects several central districts of Uttar Pradesh. Most of these districts are not fully developed. Connecting these places with cities like Lucknow, Delhi, and Patna will boost social and economic development.
  • Several development projects have been planned on the Purvanchal Expressway. Uttar Pradesh Expressway and Industrial Development Authority have been permitted to build industrial centers along the Expressway.
