India’s Bullet Train Takes Shape: 60 Percent Viaduct Complete, Major Tunnels and Stations Underway

India’s first high-speed rail project—linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad—is moving full steam ahead, with almost 60% of the viaduct already built. Major progress is being made across Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Maharashtra as this landmark infrastructure project takes shape.

The 508-km bullet train route covers 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra. It includes 12 planned stations, connecting key cities like Mumbai, Thane, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad.

Major Construction Updates

As of 18 April 2025, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) reports the following achievements:

  • 293 km of the main viaduct structure has been completed.
  • 375 km of support piers and 394 km of foundation work are done.
  • 320 km of girders—essential horizontal support beams—have been cast.

In addition, 14 river bridges have been completed in districts such as Valsad, Navsari, Kheda, and Surat. These bridges were built across different types of terrain, showing the skill and adaptability of the engineering teams.

Seven steel bridges and five prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges are also finished, adding to the structural backbone of the corridor.

Gujarat Leads the Way

Gujarat has taken the lead in overall progress:

  • Around 143 km of the track bed—the base for laying tracks—has been completed.
  • 3 lakh noise barriers have been installed along 150 km of the line to reduce sound disturbance.
  • Track welding work is ongoing, with 200-meter-long rail panels being connected.

Also, over 100 overhead electric equipment masts have been installed between Surat and Bilimora, preparing for electrification of the line.

Out of the eight stations being built in Gujarat, six have completed their main structural construction.

Maharashtra Focuses on Tunnels and Stations

In Maharashtra, work is focused on building tunnels and underground stations:

  • A 21 km tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Shilphata has seen 3.3 km of excavation completed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM).
  • Seven mountain tunnels are under construction in the Palghar district.
  • At Vikhroli and Sawli, shafts have been dug to depths of 56 and 39 meters, providing access to the tunnels below.

At the Mumbai Bullet Train Station site, major groundwork is in progress:

  • 75% of the total 18.7 lakh cubic meters of earth has been excavated.
  • 25,000 cubic meters of temperature-controlled concrete has been poured for the station’s base slab, from a total target of 2 lakh cubic meters.

The installation of 3,384 secant piles—used to support deep excavations—has been completed.

This ambitious bullet train project is turning into a reality step-by-step. With major parts of the structure already in place, India is speeding toward a new era of modern, fast, and efficient rail travel.
