About Surat Metro
Surat Metro is an under-construction mass rapid transit system (MRTS) developed by the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC). It will run in two metro corridors of 40.45 km with 38 stations. The estimated cost of the Surat Metro Rail project is Rs 12,020 crore.
In March 2019, the Surat Metro Project was approved by the Government of India. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) is a joint venture between the central and state governments. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was entrusted with the task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPIR) for the first phase of the project in January 2016. However, the DPR was revised following the 2017 Metro Policy of the Central Government, which incorporated the latest provisions.
The revised Surat Metro Rail project began in January 2021 and this part is scheduled to be completed in December 2024. The entire first phase will be completed by December 2027. The first phase of the project will cost approximately Rs 12,020 crore. Its total length will be 40.35 km, with two corridors: Red Line and Green Line.
Surat Metro Route
Surat Metro has 38 stations in two corridors. It has 32 elevated stations and six underground stations. The first corridor, the Red Line, is 21 km long and it is 15 km elevated and 6.5 km underground. It will connect Sarthana to Dream City, while the Green Line, the second corridor, will connect Bhestan to Saroli. Bhestan and Dream City will have one maintenance depot for each corridor.

Surat Metro Latest Updates
Tunnel work is progressing rapidly in the Surat Metro project, with 1.5 kilometers (km) of tunnel completed and work on four of the six underground metro stations in advanced stages.
In September 2022, construction work on the first phase of Surat Metro project began, with GMRC awarding tenders worth over Rs 3,002 crore, which also included the underground section.
GMRC General Manager said that 8–10 meters of work is done every day. Construction of the 1.5 km long Kadodara-Warehouse stretch has been completed. He claimed that the Kadodara-DreamCity portion will be completely ready in December 2024. He claims that the entire project will be completed in March 2025.
