About Pune Metro
The Pune Metro serves the city of Pune in India. The system has a combined length of 54.14 km (33.64 mi), and will operate 24.12 km (14.99 mi) on two lines, which will be operational by August 2023. The extended metro line from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi covers a distance of six km, including Bund Garden, Kalyani Nagar, and Ramwadi metro stations. It was commissioned on 6 March 2024.
The 16.59 km (10.31 mi) Purple Line runs on an elevated viaduct from PCMC Bhavan to Swargate, from where it goes underground. Between the Range Hills. From Vanaz to Ramwadi, the Aqua Line runs 14.66 km (9.11 mi) on an elevated viaduct. In December 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Purple and Aqua lines. Pune Metro Progress
The long-awaited Pune Metro Rail project is set to start underground metro services from Civil Court to Swargate in September 2024.
Officials have expressed hope for the project’s timeline after successfully conducting trial runs on the route. Successful trial runs have been conducted on the second line of underground metro services, and construction of metro stations is also underway. Officials said the line should start operating by September 2024.
The opening of the underground line will also mark the completion of Phase 1 of the Pune Metro Rail project connecting Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
Currently, the Vanaz to Ranwadi route is fully open, while the PMC to Swargate route is partially open. The establishment of underground metro stations will complete the entire line.

Purple Line (Extension of Line 1)

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) has started extending the underground section of the Pune Metro from Swargate to Katraj by January 2024. The current status of this section is as follows:
MahaMetro will appoint a design consultant to build an underground passage from Swargate to Katraj. The proposed underground metro line from Katraj to Swargate will cost Rs 3,668 crore to be constructed. The project should be completed by April 2027, but it needs the approval of the central government. There is no metro station at Padmavati and Katraj, and locals are demanding an additional station at Balaji Nagar or Bharati Vidyapeeth.
The project has been sent to the Public Investment Board (PIB) for approval. After getting approval from the PIB, it will be sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval. The Katraj underground passage, which starts from Swargate of Pune Metro, will benefit people living in Padmavati, Gul Tekdi, Dhankawadi, Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Sainath Nagar, Ambegaon, Balaji Nagar and Katraj.

Maha Metro has invited bids to build a 4.5 km long elevated viaduct between PMC and Negdi Road on the North-South Corridor of Pune Metro Reach 1 Extension by Dec. 2023. Interested bidders can download the relevant documents from the Maha Metro e-tender portal from 4:00 PM on December 16, 2023 to 4:00 PM on January 22, 2024.

Extension of Line 3 Pune Metro

Currently, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to extend the Hinjewadi-Shivaji Nagar Pune Metro Line-3 by 18 km to Loni railway station (Kadam Vasti gram panchayat) in east Pune.
The current progress of the metro is 46 per cent, officials said. A consortium of Tata Group’s Trill Urban Transport Private Limited (TUTPL) and Siemens Project Ventures took up the project in 2019.
This section is 23.3 km long and should be completed by March 2025. 923 pillars (currently 715) will elevate the metro line. The diameter of the metro pillars is 2000 mm and they follow the design of the metro rail system. Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited will develop and operate the project and will be implemented through public-private partnership. It involves the construction of a two-decker bridge, one of which will be a metro and the other will be a vehicular bridge.

Expansion of Pune Metro from PCMC to Nigdi
Initially, Pune Metro had planned to build three stations from PCMC to Nigdi. However, the MLA of Bhosari constituency demanded a fourth station, which would be at Nigdi, Tilak Chowk. The demand was considered by the Metro administration. Tenders have been issued for the 4.5 km long viaduct, which will be operational by January 2024. As per metro rules, the station should be built at a distance of 1 to 1.5 km from the first station.
There are four Pune Metro stations in the PCMC-Nigdi section: Chittorgarh Station, Akuri Chowk Station, Nigdi—Tilak Chowk, Nigdi- Bhakti Shakti Park. There is a demand to build a multimodal hub at Bhakti Shakti Chowk station, which will be like Swargate station in Nigdi. It will include services like PMPML buses, parking, food court, theatre etc., all available at one place.
