In the Union Budget for 2025-26, the Ministry of Railways earmarked ₹10,440 crore specifically for the development of railway infrastructure in the Northeast.
This allocation is part of a broader strategy to modernize the region’s transportation network, reflecting the government’s commitment to balanced regional development.
The comprehensive plan encompasses 18 projects, covering a total length of 1,368 kilometers. These initiatives include the construction of new railway lines, track doubling, and gauge conversion projects, all aimed at enhancing the capacity and efficiency of the rail network.
Notably, over 310 kilometers of these projects have already been commissioned, marking significant progress in the region’s infrastructural development.
A key objective of these projects is to integrate the capital cities of the northeastern states into the national railway network. This integration is expected to facilitate seamless travel and commerce, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
The expansion plans also include projects aimed at improving cross-border connectivity with neighboring countries. These initiatives are anticipated to boost trade and strengthen diplomatic ties, positioning the Northeast as a pivotal hub for international commerce.
The enhanced railway infrastructure is expected to act as a catalyst for economic growth by attracting investments, promoting tourism, and creating employment opportunities. Improved connectivity will facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people, thereby stimulating various sectors of the economy.
Beyond economic benefits, the railway expansion is poised to improve access to education, healthcare, and other essential services, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents in the region. The projects are also expected to promote cultural exchange and national integration by bridging geographical barriers.
The Indian Railways’ substantial investment and strategic initiatives in Northeast India signify a transformative phase in the region’s development. By enhancing connectivity, these projects are set to unlock the economic potential of the Northeast, fostering inclusive growth and integration with the rest of the country.
