The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is currently developing the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal Expressway, a 19.881 km, 4-lane, double-tiered expressway in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This access-controlled highway will follow a route along the Cooum River and NH-4 and will feature 7 on-ramps for entry and 6 off-ramps for exit. The expressway is being built to improve transportation and connectivity in the region.

Chennai Port Maduravoyal Expressway
The Chennai Port—Maduravoyal Expressway is being built in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is six-lane and 20.6 kilometers (12.8 mi) long. The corridor starts from Chennai Port Gate No. 10 and runs along the banks of the Cooum River along NH 48 to Maduravoyal until it reaches Koyambedu. It is also named the elevated freeway of India.
Route Map and Packages
The expressway has been divided into 4 civil packages, with each package having a deadline of 910 days (2.5 years). The bidding process for each package is currently underway, and the contractors for each package have not yet been announced. A PDF route map for the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal Expressway has not yet been made available to the public. However, a map of the route can be found in NHAI’s tender documents.
The expressway has been divided into the following 4 packages:
Package 1 (4.262 km): Connecting km 0.342 to km 4.604
Package 2 (5.096 km): Connecting km 4.604 to km 9.700
Package 3 (4.485 km): Connecting km 9.700 to km 14.185
Package 4 (6.038 km): Connecting km 14.185 to km 20.223
Features
When completed, the expressway is expected to have a design capacity to handle 40,000 passenger cars per day. This will greatly improve transportation and connectivity in the region, and is expected to reduce congestion and travel time for commuters.
Progress
Work on the Rs 5,885 crore Chennai Port to Maduravoyal Elevated Expressway project, which was stuck for a long time, has finally begun.
The project will see a new double-tier four-lane elevated corridor being constructed in Tamil Nadu from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal.
The Chennai Elevated Corridor work has been awarded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to J Kumar Infraprojects Ltd at a project cost of Rs 3,570 crore. The remaining amount is for land acquisition and river restoration charges.
The Bharatmala Pariyojana is divided into four packages and is being implemented in the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode.
