Construction on the 121-kilometre Ambala–Shamli Expressway is moving steadily and is expected to be completed by December 2026, according to Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij. The expressway is a key segment of the larger Bareilly–Ludhiana Economic Corridor and is being developed to strengthen road connectivity across northern India.
Officials briefed the minister that work is progressing as planned, with major construction milestones being met on schedule.

Strengthening North India’s Expressway Network
Once completed, the expressway will connect Ambala in Haryana with Shamli in Uttar Pradesh and link directly to the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway at Shamli. This junction is expected to significantly reduce travel times and offer a continuous high speed corridor between major urban and industrial centres.
The route is designed to improve long distance travel efficiency while easing pressure on existing highways that currently handle a mix of local and through traffic.
Route Details and Corridor Significance
The expressway begins near Sadopur in Ambala district and runs through several parts of Haryana before terminating at Gogwan Jalalpur in Shamli district. From there, it integrates with the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, creating a critical east west connection.
Although the road itself passes mainly through Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, it forms part of the six lane Bareilly–Ludhiana Economic Corridor. This wider network is intended to streamline freight movement and passenger travel across multiple states.
Construction Progress and Related Projects
The National Highways Authority of India has reported that construction activities are advancing without major delays. Alongside the Ambala–Shamli Expressway, work is also underway on other regional projects, including the Ambala–Mohali Expressway, which is expected to improve access to Chandigarh and Mohali.
During recent project reviews, Minister Vij also emphasised the importance of completing the Ambala Ring Road on time. The ring road, aimed at diverting through traffic away from city streets, is also scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
Additional works such as service roads, upgraded underpasses and overbridges, and improved access points are being planned to ensure smoother local movement along the corridor.
Expected Impact on Regional Economy
The expressway is expected to deliver tangible benefits once it becomes operational. Travel between Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh is likely to become faster and more predictable. Freight traffic moving towards Delhi and the Dehradun corridor should also see efficiency gains.
Officials believe the project will encourage development along the route, supporting logistics hubs, warehousing, and related commercial activity in nearby districts.
Taken together, the Ambala–Shamli Expressway reflects the broader push by state and central agencies to expand expressway infrastructure as a foundation for long term regional growth.
