Ahmedabad Airport to Connect Directly to Metro: Route and Key Details

Passengers will get the convenience and connectivity of metro services to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. After cities like Delhi and Mumbai have metro lines built to airports, Ahmedabad will soon join the list, giving more options to its residents and tourists. Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), which is spearheading the project, has already submitted a detailed project report (DPIR) to the central government for approval.

Residents have been eagerly awaiting the proposed metro link to Ahmedabad airport as it is a part of the Phase-2B metro expansion. A senior GMRC official confirmed that the plan has reached the final stage and is awaiting approval from the central government. The project has a construction budget of around Rs 1,800 crore and is aimed at collaboration between the central and state governments.

The new metro corridor will be about six kilometers long and is designed to facilitate the movement of about 35,000 people daily. The route will directly connect passengers to many parts of the city, from important places like the Narendra Modi Stadium to the airport via Koteshwar and Koba stations. The route also has an underground section of about one kilometer near the airport, which is designed to remove any bottlenecks and ease the travel of passengers.

Ahmedabad’s comprehensive development plan includes the extension of the metro to the airport, which is slated to begin in September 2022. Though a stretch between Thaltej and Thaltej Gam is still being built, the first phase covers several parts of the city at a cost of around ₹12,700 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the second phase, costing ₹5384 crore in September, covering 28 km, of which 21 km are already operational.

The metro link to Ahmedabad Airport is of great significance for the city. It is in line with broader efforts to connect airports to metro networks in India, easing air passenger travel and improving urban public transport. This connection to the airport is expected to improve accessibility for locals and outsiders, benefiting the city’s mobility and transport system.

Ahmedabad is eagerly waiting for the inauguration of this metro extension, a project that will bring a whole new level of convenience, reliability, and connectivity to the region. As the city moves closer to realizing this vision, people are looking forward to a future when the metro will make reaching Ahmedabad and the airport easier than ever before.
