About Mumbai Metro

The rapid transit metro system is intended to reduce traffic congestion in the city and complement the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It is being built in three phases and is expected to be completed in October 2026. As of Nov 2024, the 59.5 km (37.0 mi) long Mumbai Metro is the fourth longest metro network in India. When completed, the core system will have sixteen high-capacity metro railway lines, spanning over 523 km (325 mi) (25% underground, the rest elevated, some built at grade) and serving 350 stations.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority maintains the metro system in the Greater Mumbai area, while the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited looks after all metro rail projects being developed in Maharashtra.

Mumbai Metro Fares

The fare of Mumbai Metro is Rs. 20 for 3–12 km, Rs. 30 for 18–24 km, Rs. 40 for 18–24 km and Rs. 40 for 24–30 km. Passengers also get a trip pass or smart card, which is valid for forty five trips and forty days. However, a security deposit of fifty rupees has to be paid, which is withdrawable as per the prevailing laws.

Conclusion

The Mumbai Metro is a major force in reshaping Mumbai’s urban landscape. Each new line brings the city closer to sustainable, efficient and convenient transport, greatly benefiting the environment, the economy and the daily lives of millions of people. The expansion of the Mumbai Metro reflects Mumbai’s evolution into a modern, cosmopolitan metropolis.
