About 80 km of the total 82 km of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor project has been completed.
Officials said only two km are left to build the viaduct in Meerut. It has a 12 km underground portion and a 68 km elevated portion.
India’s first regional rail service, RRTS, provides a first-of-its-kind rail-based commuter service for regional transit in the national capital region. The country’s first RRTS is an 82.15 km long corridor system from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh
It will transform travel in the national capital region, with travel time between Delhi and Meerut less than an hour.
The RRTS corridor also features Namo Bharat trains, which currently run on the initial 34 km from Sahibabad to Modinagar North. The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) regularly updates each station’s construction status.
The average speed of the Namo Bharat Rapid Rails is 90 km/h, making them semi-high-speed trains, while they run at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
The first phase of the project connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot was completed in October 2023.
Partial work of Phase 2 from Duhai Depot to Meerut South is expected to be completed by March 2024. Phase 3, which extends from Sarai Kale Khan to Sahibabad, is targeted to be completed by December 2024.
Phase 4 work from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
Sarai Kale Khan station will have Delhi’s largest parking facility, accommodating 275 cars and 900 two-wheelers. Delhi has a 14-km stretch of 9 km elevated and 5 km underground, with Anand Vihar station connected to the Delhi Metro’s Blue and Pink lines, Financial Express reported.
Meerut South station, ready for NaMo Bharat services, has three platforms and the largest parking area, accommodating 900 two-wheelers and 300 cars. The section built from Meerut South to Modipuram depot will connect 11 stations and is expected to be operational by June 2025.
