UK Firm Mace Appointed for Hong Kong Railway Extension Project

Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation, a majority state-owned public transport operator and property developer has appointed UK-based construction firm Mace to the role of programme management partner (PMP) for its railway expansion projects.

Mace said it will create a project management office (PMO) to “enable the smooth implementation of PMO functions and digital systems to support the client’s transformational and digital project goals and vision.”

Financials for the agreement were not available.

Mace said: “This partnership aims to further enhance the PMO capability of the capital works team and enable the team to establish best-in-class integrated project controls, digital services, and NEC [new engineering contract] contracts.”

Davendra Dabasiya, CEO of Mace Consult, said the announcement follows the group’s first consulting engagement.

“Our work with MTR began with strategic consultation and now enables Mace to work closely with our client,” Dabasia explained.

The MTRC is currently undertaking six significant railway projects and extensions: the Northern Link Project, Hung Shui Kiu Station, Tuen Mun South Extension, Tung Chung Line Extension, Oyster Bay Station, and the Airport Railway Extended Overrun Tunnel. The projects are estimated to cost over $19 billion.

TMS Expansion Project Details

The West Rail line (WRL) will extend from Tuen Mun station via a new viaduct along the Tuen Mun River. The WRL was formerly one of the original lines of the Hong Kong MTR system, now incorporated into the Tuen Ma line.

The plan will see two new stations built: an intermediate station at Tuen Mun Area 16 (A16) and a terminal station at TMS near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. The new stations will be next to transport terminuses and light rail stops, allowing convenient interchange.

It will extend to the future terminal station and the viaduct will connect to the existing overrun facility at Tuen Mun station.

New Stations Details

The TMS station will be built on Wu King Road near Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. It will have two entrances: Wu King Road Garden and Siu Hei Shopping Centre located near Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. The platforms will be on the top level of the elevated station and the mezzanine level of the concourse. It will bring a unique and stunning view to the promenade.

The A16 station will be built along the Tuen Mun River, at the current Tuen Mun Swimming Pool. The station will be built over three levels: the upper level will be the platform, and the middle level will be the concourse. There will be entrances at both the ground and middle levels. There will be entrances near the GREEN@TUEN MUN recycling facility and Hoi Wong Road Garden.
