Union Cabinet gifts Delhi Metro two new lines: Lajpat Nagar to Saket, Inderlok to Indraprastha

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said that the Delhi government will give Rs 1,987 crore and the Central government will give Rs 1,547 crore, and the remaining will come from the loan, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s funds and from public-private partnership.

The Union Cabinet on 13th march approved two new corridors of Delhi Metro Phase-IV (one from Indralok to Indraprastha and the other from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G-Block), which will cost Rs 8,399 crore of which, Rs 4,309 crore will be in the form of a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Cabinet passed proposals for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which may be the last Cabinet meeting before the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.

Announcing the Cabinet decision, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said the Delhi government will contribute Rs 1,987 crore and the Central government will contribute Rs 1,547 crore, with the remaining loan coming from public private partnership (PPP). , She said that once completed the corridor would have 2.5 lakh passengers per day.

Both the corridors will cover a total distance of 20.76 km. A government announcement said the extension of the Indralok-Indraprastha corridor will provide interchanges with the Red, Yellow, Magenta, Purple, Blue and Airport lines.

The release said the 12.37 km long corridor will have 10 stations: Indralok, Daya Basti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, LNJP Hospital, Delhi Gate, Delhi Secretariat and Indraprastha. This will provide connectivity to Bahadurgarh to the passengers.

The 8.38 km long Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will connect with the Golden (earlier called Silver Line), Magenta, Pink and Violet Lines. The fully elevated corridor will be made up of eight stations: Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash-1, Chirag Delhi, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket District Centre, Pushp Vihar and Saket G Block.

The Indralok-Indraprastha line will connect to the Bahadurgarh area of Delhi Metro, which is already building 65 km of network as part of its Phase IV expansion. These new corridors are expected to be completed in phases by March 2026.

The current network of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is one of the fastest growing metro networks in the world, being 391 kilometers long consisting of 286 stations.

Also, Thakur said that the two new corridors will be completed by March 2029. However, the government announcement said that DMRC has already started tendering the projects. The three corridors of Phase IV, approved in 2019, are still being built. He claimed that the 65 kilometer long corridor would be completed by 2026.

Lajpat Nagar to Saket G-Block

Saket G-Block metro corridor will be about 8.4 kilometers from Lajpat Nagar. There will be a completely elevated corridor, which will have eight stations. Silver, Magenta, Pink and Violet lines of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will get this corridor.

At all eight locations: Lajpat Nagar, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash-1, Chirag Delhi, Pushpa Bhawan, Saket District Centre, Pushp Vihar, Saket G Block

The Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block corridor will improve connectivity in areas like Andrews Ganj and Greater Kailash in South Delhi and will connect many areas of Saket with metro.

Inderlok to Indraprastha

The second metro corridor is from Indralok to Indraprastha. This part of the metro line will be approximately 12.4 kilometers long. This corridor will have an underground portion of 11.35 kilometers (or 10 stations) and an elevated portion of 1.028 kilometers (or 10 stations).

The new Indralok to Indraprastha metro corridor, essentially an extension of the Green Line, will provide interchange with the Red, Yellow, Airport, Magenta, Violet and Blue lines.

The area has all ten metro stations: Indralok, Daya Basti, Sarai Rohilla, Ajmal Khan Park, Nabi Karim, New Delhi, LNJP Hospital, Delhi Gate, Delhi Secretariat and Indraprastha.
