Delhi Metro Launches First Make in India Driverless Train with GOA 4 Technology

Under the ‘Make in India’ program, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has built its first Metropolis metro trainset equipped with driverless technology. This is the first time the DMRC has outsourced a project to an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

The first batch of trains built under the ‘Make in India’ campaign has been dispatched from Alstom’s facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, where the expansion phase started.

These state-of-the-art trainsets are equipped with Grade of Automation (GOA) 4 driverless technology, allowing them to run safely at speeds ranging from 85 km/h to 95 km/h. The new trains will run on three lines of the Delhi Metro, totaling 64.67 km, two extensions, and the newly developed Gold Line 10.

This 312 million euro DMRC project is the first one the OEM has outsourced, including the metro network expansion and 15 years of maintenance.

According to a report by Finance Express, 52 train sets, each with six vehicles, were ordered in November 2022 as part of efforts to kickstart the Phase 4 expansion. Now India’s first driverless train is ready for operation, marking a significant milestone in the country’s infrastructure and self-reliance drive.

Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom, stressed that the new trains will have a positive impact on Delhi’s urban development. “These trains will play a vital role in improving the quality of life of citizens and accelerating the city’s development,” he said. He said the project will strengthen the long-standing partnership between Alstom and DMRC.
